What is AI visibility? The plain definition, how it is measured, and how to check yours
AI visibility is whether an AI search engine names your product when someone asks it for a product like yours. Ask ChatGPT "what tool turns my screenshots into an explainer video" and it answers with three or four names. If yours is one of them, you are visible. If it is not, a buyer who asked that question will never know you exist, because they never saw a results page to scroll.
That is the whole idea. The rest of this guide covers what the term means in practice, how tools turn it into a score, what a good score looks like, why it has become a number founders watch, and how to check yours in about 30 seconds.
The definition, and what it is not
AI visibility measures how often, and how favourably, an AI assistant mentions, cites or recommends your product in the answers it generates. The assistants that matter in 2026 are ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, with Perplexity and Copilot behind them. Each one answers a buyer's question with a short list of products and, often, a few source links.
It is not SEO. Search engine optimisation is about where a URL ranks on a results page a person then scrolls. AI visibility is about whether an answer, written for one person, includes you at all. A page can rank third on Google for "best meeting transcription app" and never be named by ChatGPT for the same question, because the assistant read other pages when it formed its answer.
It is also not brand monitoring in the old sense. A social listening tool counts mentions that already happened. An AI visibility check asks the question itself, today, and records who the assistant names. The answer changes from day to day, which is why the serious tools check daily.
AI visibility, GEO, AEO: the vocabulary
The same idea travels under several names, and the tools use them loosely. A short map:
- AI search is any assistant that answers a question directly instead of returning links: ChatGPT (with ChatGPT Search), Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode on top of the results page. "AI answer engines" and "AI platforms" mean the same set.
- AI visibility, sometimes "AI search visibility" or "brand visibility in AI", is the outcome: how often those answers name you.
- GEO, generative engine optimization, and AEO, answer engine optimization, are the work of improving it, the way SEO is the work of improving search rankings. "AI search optimization" is the same work under a third name.
- Prompts are what the tools call buyer questions. Citations are the pages an answer lists as its sources. Brand mentions count any time your name appears, recommended or not; share of voice is your mentions as a share of every product mentioned for a set of prompts.
Traditional SEO tools now bolt an "AI visibility toolkit" onto keyword tracking, and a new set of AI visibility platforms does only this. Either way, the unit of measurement is the same, which is the next section.
How AI visibility is measured
Every tool measures the same three things, with different packaging.
- Which questions to ask. A set of "buyer questions" or "prompts", phrased the way a customer would ask them, without your product's name in them. "What AI tool turns product screenshots into a video?" is a buyer question. "Is TapVid good?" is not; it names you, so the answer tells you nothing about discovery.
- Which assistants to ask. At least ChatGPT and Gemini, and for most buyers Claude. Some tools add Perplexity, Copilot, Grok and Google AI Mode. More engines cost more and matter less: in launch-week checks across 347 products, Claude recommended 19% of them, ChatGPT 12% and Gemini 6%, so the three disagree often enough that each one is its own signal.
- What counts as visible. The strict reading is "named as an option for that question". A looser reading counts any mention, including "unlike X". FrontStat uses the strict one, and also records who the assistant named instead, which is usually the more useful fact.
From those answers, a tool reports a share: the number of answers that recommend you, divided by the number of answers checked. Three engines and five questions give fifteen answers a day; recommended in six of them is 40%. Most "AI visibility scores" are that share, sometimes weighted by how prominently you appear, sometimes mixed with sentiment.
What a good AI visibility score is
Lower than you would guess. Across the 347 new products FrontStat checked in their launch week between 17 September and 7 October 2026, asking each product's main buyer question on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini:
- 73% were recommended by none of the three.
- 27% were recommended by at least one.
- 2% were recommended by all three.
So for a product that launched this month, one engine naming you puts you in the top quarter. Established products score higher, and the "above 50 is good" rule of thumb you will see quoted comes from brand-level benchmarks with hundreds of prompts, not from a single product's main question. Treat any score as a trend line to move, not a grade to pass. A fuller breakdown, with what moves the number, is in What is a good AI visibility score?
Why it matters now
Because the buyer who asks ChatGPT does not click through to a results page afterwards. The answer is the result. If the assistant names three products, the buyer tries those three. There is no page two.
Two things make the number worth watching rather than just knowing. First, the answers move. Assistants that search the web before answering read whatever is current, so a product can be named on Tuesday and absent on Wednesday. Second, the answers are not random. In the same 347 launches, products whose own site was cited in at least one answer were recommended 51% of the time; products never cited were recommended 8% of the time. The assistant names what it read. That is a lever, and the next section is about pulling it.
What moves AI visibility
From the launch-week data, in order of how much difference each showed:
- Being a source the assistant reads. 66% of answers cited at least one page. The sites cited most for new products were GitHub, the Apple App Store, Reddit, Google Play, Wikipedia, dev.to, Product Hunt and AlternativeTo. A product with a page on one of those, or with its own site cited, is far more likely to be named.
- The assistant knowing what you are. Asked "What is product?", the assistant was wrong, thin or lost for 20% of products on ChatGPT, 26% on Claude and 16% on Gemini. Products that all three described correctly were recommended 35% of the time; the rest, 19%. An engine cannot recommend what it cannot describe.
- Ranking first for your own name. 58% of new products do; 26% are not on page one at all. The ones that rank first were recommended 31% of the time against 23% for the rest. Assistants start from search results.
- Launch listings, on their own, do not. Products listed on two or more launch sites were recommended exactly as often as products listed on one: 27%. Listings help the two levers above (a source page, a correct description) only when the listing is somewhere the assistant reads.
The step-by-step version is in How to improve AI visibility, and the method behind each check is on the AI recommendations page.
Checking once against tracking every day
A one-time check, or an "AI visibility audit", answers "where do we stand today?". A free AI visibility checker is enough for that. Tracking answers "did the change we made work?", and for that you need the same prompts asked on the same AI models every day, with each answer and its citations stored, so a flip from "named" to "not named" is a dated event you can connect to a page you published or a page a rival published. Weekly reports hide those flips. Daily tracking shows them, which is why the serious tools, FrontStat included, check daily and alert on change.
How to check your AI visibility for free
Paste your URL into the free AI visibility checker. FrontStat reads your site, writes the buyer question your customers would ask, puts it to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with web search on, and shows you three things in about 30 seconds: whether each one recommends you, who it names instead, and which pages it cited. The report also checks whether you rank first for your own name and which launch listings give you a link Google counts.
To watch the number move, FrontStat Pro checks up to 10 of your buyer questions every day and emails you the day an assistant starts or stops recommending you. The tools that do this at brand scale, with prices and engines side by side, are in Best AI visibility tools.
AI visibility in one paragraph
AI visibility is whether ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name you when a buyer asks for a product like yours. It is measured by asking real buyer questions, recording who gets named, and reporting the share that includes you. For a new product, one engine out of three is a good start and all three is rare. The number moves when the assistants can read a page about you, when they can describe you correctly, and when your own site is one of the sources they cite. Check it free, then watch it.
Questions
What does AI visibility mean?
AI visibility is whether an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini names your product in its answer when a buyer asks for a product like yours. It is measured by asking real buyer questions and recording who the assistant recommends.
How is AI visibility different from SEO?
SEO is about where your page ranks on a results page a person scrolls. AI visibility is about whether an answer written for one person includes your product at all. A page can rank well on Google and still never be named by ChatGPT for the same question.
What is a good AI visibility score?
For a product that launched this month, being recommended by one of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini puts you in the top 27%; all three is 2%. Brand-level benchmarks that quote 'above 50' use hundreds of prompts and established brands. Treat the score as a trend to move.
How do I check my AI visibility for free?
Paste your URL into FrontStat's free checker. It writes your buyer question, asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini with web search on, and shows whether each one recommends you, who it names instead and which pages it cited, in about 30 seconds.
What improves AI visibility the most?
Being a page the assistant reads. In FrontStat's launch-week data, products whose own site was cited in at least one answer were recommended 51% of the time, against 8% for products never cited. Being described correctly and ranking first for your own name come next.
